Looks Alien? These are actually bird nests built on the rock faces just above the river and made of river mud. I believe the bird that builds them is called a Mud Swallow. The openings are about 2-3 inches in diameter and the base close to 8 inches. Taken while rafting down the Gunnison River this spring 2003 somewhere between Delta and Whitewater Colorado.
